Martha Rosler Critique

While I was looking through the different photographers we had to choose from, I was most interested in the work of Martha Rosler. The reason why, is because she obviously uses some sort of photo manipulation to add drama to her photos. There are a series of photos, like the one above, that show some sort of glamorous life-style, but when you look closer at the background some terrible thing is happening, like in this photograph, the woman looks to be wealthy and going about her daily routine, while behind her, there is a  fire, or explosion happening.

I think where she was going with this is that people tend to look over the horrible things going on in the world if the horrible thing doesn't affect them directly, like the woman in the photograph, her back is turned to the tragedy outside her window.

I find it very interesting that when you look at a photograph already surrounded by text, it automatically tells you what you should think about the photograph. But I have never thought about looking at different photographs in several different contexts, it is so true that a picture is worth a thousand words, and each of those words can make the picture tell a completely different story.

It makes me laugh because what the photographer was most likely trying to portray with the photograph is not at all what the audience will view it as, and if the photographer told their point of view on the picture, I am almost certain that no one else would have thought that was what they were trying to get across to their viewer.

This reading made me realize how important text can actually be when presenting a photograph. If you want to get your ideas across how you originally thought of them, it is probably a  very smart thing to incorporate text somehow in the presentation.
